Alice in Chains MTV unplugged

I grew up during the 90's and grunge and alternative music are like the anthem for my youth. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Candle Box, Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone, Moonpools and Cartepilars, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins are some of the bands that I really adore and at that time I collects their albums in cassete format.


I recently purchase the LP of Alice in Chains MTV unplugged. It is remastered and released by Music On Vinyl. I really love this LP and thoroughly enjoy all the songs. It bring back the memories of the joy and delightedness in listening this album in my room alone during my junior high school. Also, this was one of the last shows Alice In Chains performed before the death of their vocalist Layne Stanley so listening to this also make me kind of sad. Last month on April 5th was the anniversary for the Layne's death. RIP Layne.  


The unplug version of their songs are great and even the guitar sounds are not distorted and heavy as they used to be, we can still feel the the gloomy, bleak and nihilistic moods of their music. The ominous and dark voice of Layne's focal is become more prominent because of the usage of acoustic guitars and bass. The notes and cords from the guitars can be heard more clearly because of using acoustics guitars. This may be one of their best live performances they ever held and one of the best MTV unplugged shows ever.

School Food Punishment is Guud!

Band asal Jepang yang bernama School Food Punishment ini bergenre shoegaze-pop, dan dari musik mereka ada pula unsur musik electronica, noise rock, dan japanese rock. Band ini beranggotakan Yumi Uchimura (vocal & guitar) Masayuki Hasuo (keyboard), Hideaki Yamasaki (bass, chorus), Osamu Hidai (drums).  

Salah satu alasan yang membuat saya salut sama musik mereka adalah selain mereka mampu menulis lagu yang mudah ditangkap dan dicerna, mereka juga dapat, secara bersamaan, mengaransemen musik yang dengan rumit dan mempunyai skill yang hebat dalam memainkan instrumen dan memberikan warna yang beragam pada musik mereka dengan bereksperimen menggunakan pedal-pedal efek. Beragam pedal efek digunakan pada gitar dan keyboard menciptakan "wall of sound," terkadang terdengar cendrung halus, tapi juga terkadang terdengar suara-suara distorsi kasar dari kedua instrumen itu. Dan ini dicampur dengan arpegio-arpegio dari keyboard dan bass yang rumit dan melodis, ketukan drum yang solid dan tidak datar, serta suara vocal yang sangat lantang.

Dengan mendengar musik mereka, bisa terlihat jelas sekali kalau mereka semua mempunyai skill yang cukup tinggi dalam bermain instument dan mahir dalam teknik pengaransemenan lagu. Dan itu semua dibarengi dengan lagu-lagu yang catchy dan relatif mudah ditangkap.  Kombinasi yang sehat akan skill dan "accessibility" dalam menulis lagu ini yang menurut saya membuat mereka terlihat brilliant.

Ini video dari Live mereka. Sepertinya mereka pakai additional guitarist, kayanya ini gara-gara ngisi gitarnya susah kalau sambil nyanyi. Tempo, rift gitar, dan permainan pedal-pedal efek dalam permaian gitar dilagu ini menurut saya cukup rumit apabila dimainkan sambil menyanyi.
